Vintage Film Suggestion Thread
Thought I would start this thread because I don't want to continue flooding the 2018 Movie thread with my requests for good older films to watch.

Not sure what years we should be concentrating on but probably pre 1980 would be a good place to start.

I am a major film fan and adore old films with the Hollywood greats of the past and to me they are far better than most of the dross served up these days so any suggestions plant them here and I'll try and get round to watching them and hopefully others too will benefit.

Obviously there are plenty of classics so it's not so much The Great Escape or Spartacus which most of us must have seen but any suggestions of hidden gems or forgotten classics would be appreciated.

Here are some of my suggestions that are must watch if you like the old films.

Hitchcock classics such as Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo, Rope, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Frenzy, To Catch a Thief and my all time favourite film Rear Window. Plenty of others I know and am slowly making my way through.

Others are Day The Earth Stood Still (the old one!), Angels With Dirty Faces, The Bishops Wife, Cape Fear (Mitchum/Peck), It's a Wonderful Life, Hound of the Baskervilles (Cushing/Lee) and if you like classic cheesy horrors the likes of The Beast Must Die, Horror Express, The Vault of Horror and Dr Terror's House of Horrors are worth a watch.

Obviously plenty more but that's a start.

The Third Man (1949)

What the critics say: "One of the greatest films ever made" (C. O'Ffee)

Starring: Trevor Howard, Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles
Director: Carol Reed
Writer: Graham Greene

A thriller that takes place in post-war Vienna. Highly atmospheric, memorable music and cinematography.

If you like 70's disaster movies bar the obvious ones others worth taking a look at are : The Cassandra Crossing, Two-Minute Warning , Meteor, Rollercoaster, The Medusa Touch and the cliché ridden The Swarm which I can only assume Michael Caine did for the money. Loved them as a kid though great fun.

'Night Of The Hunter'. Robert Mitcham as the murdering preacher. Even better than Cape Fear in my opinion.

My old mum loved the old musicals like those and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

I used to love the old Westerns as well and only saw The Searchers a few months ago. Some of the 70's films were quality. I saw The French Connection again not long ago and what a film that was.
